One thing I think is definitely underutilized by low limit players is the river checkraise or even the river check call. It’s important to realize when you have a hand that, if you bet, no worse hand will call you, but you can definitely catch some bluffs with it or get worse hands to try and value bet into you. Here is a hand that illustrates that nicely

Most players would just bet the river but hardly any hand is going to call and you get much more value from check calling

Another situation that arises is that you have a very strong hand and you know your opponent also has a very strong but not as good of a hand. Most players just bet the pot or something but a much better move is to checkraise the river here because you know that the villain is not going to let the hand get checked through. For example

It takes balls to check that river, but I’m 90% sure here that someone has trips

Of course sometimes the river check can backfire and you miss a lot of value on hands like here, so you need to mix up your play.

Finally the river checkraise bluff.

It is VERY seldom used by low stakes players and the situation has to be just right to use it. In this hand I have top pair medium kicker. The ideal situation is that you could conceivably have the nuts but your opponent cannot and is probably making a thin value bet on the river. On this hand villain raises utg+1 making it extremely unlikely he has JT. I call on the flop because I have top pair okay kicker. He bets the turn and I think to myself that’s weird, there’s no way he has JT but it’s conceivable that I could, why is he betting, I call. On the river I was hoping to get a cheap showdown, but he bets again. At this point he either has a bluff, or is making a thin value bet with AK, AA, maybe 2pair or a set. You might say, oh you have top pair why not just call, you might be good if he’s bluffing. Well because if I raise I can represent JT and get all one pair hands to fold and give all sets and 2pair hands a difficult, but probably very thin call. It also has the added benefits of preventing villain from trying to make thin river value bets on me in the future for fear of being checkraised all in and possibly more action with the nuts later if he decides to look me up here.

I hope this was helpful/usefull to someone. Comments are welcome!
