Got my 40″ yesterday and its pretty sweet. Haven’t been playing much poker lately but have been doing well nonetheless. I did manage to sleep through my coaching appointment with nutedawg though, I hope he’s not too pissed at me. We rescheduled for tomorrow so I’m looking forward to that. Just watched Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse: Deathproof and it was excellent. By far the best movie I’ve seen in awhile. Children of Men was kinda disappointing to be honest but still a pretty good movie. I’ve been playing a little chinese poker for play money recently to learn the game and its pretty fun. It seems to be mostly luck though, I have been confused about how to play a few hands like is it better to have two pair in the middle and jack high in the front or one pair in each? I’m not really sure but it’s pretty fun regardless. You can read an article on basic rules and strategy here: http://www.deucescracked.com/articles/221-Chinese-Poker-Rules-and-Strategy

and you can play for play money at: http://www.tigergaming.com/ if you are interested in learning the game.

So obviously I’ve been running sick hot lately. It’s like I can’t lose an all in. It’s kind of funny reading last post about how it’s only a matter of time before things turn around – well let me tell you they have. To be honest, I think my play has been pretty poor lately and I’ve gotten it in super bad more than a few times in the past two days but managed to suckout for big pots. That’s really why bluffing or semibluffing with at least a few outs is so important. You may not hit them that often but when you do it can make a BIG difference. I’ve reached my goal of 20k hands by the 15th and I kind of think 40k hands a month is on the low end for a professional poker play. Next month I will probably strive for at least 50k hands.

I’ve been reading a little super system 2 lately and today after I read Daniel Negreanu’s chapter on 2-7 triple draw I decided to give that game a try. Let me tell you the play is BAD! I managed to win like $50 playing the game for the first time in my life with literally 20 minutes of studying. Playing the other games at low limits can be a nice change of pace sometimes and something I will definitely be doing in the future for fun and to keep myself from becoming super bored with poker. I have a lot of respect for someone like Jackal69 who makes videos on cardrunners who is proficient at almost all forms of poker from SNGs, NLHE, Limit Hold’em, MTTs, Omaha, Razz, stud, 2-7 triple draw, etc. I doubt I will ever be as good at any other form of poker besides NLHE, but I think it’s good to diversify your game from time to time. Best of luck at the tables and sorry if I’ve sucked out on you recently! I guess I was due.

In case you haven’t already heard Good2cu has a prop bet going with a guy that he can’t live out of a Bellagio bathroom for 30 days. http://www.cardplayer.com/tv/29893 for the cardplayer vid and http://www.shipitholla.com for the details.

So I watched a lot of football today and didn’t play too much. Both games were upsets and pretty good/surprising. My only hope is San Diego has what it takes to beat the Patriots next week. I hate those cheaters with a passion and if they win another superbowl I’ll probably throw up in my mouth. But anyways, I ended up playing two sessions today, one at 600nl where I won everything I lost yesterday back and then just now I played a very quick session of 400nl where I promptly lost 4 buyins to put me back in the red for the day. It was pretty sick, 291 hands, -$1600. AA less than set of 3s, 55 less than QQ on a KQ5 flop, AQs less than T8s on a 345 flop two of our suits, and AQs less than QQ against a guy I had just 3 bet for about the 4th time in a row. I’m now breakeven over my past 9k hands which is rather annoying, but I think it’s only a matter of time before I start running good again hopefully. Here’s my favorite hand of the day.

So I took yesterday off to hang out with my girlfriend and whatnot, came back to play today and I gotta say I think my play suffered a little bit. I feel like poker playing is a skill just like playing an instrument, driving a car, or playing a video game and if you don’t practice every day your play is going to suffer for it in the future. It was nothing bad, like I didn’t play horrible today or anything, but a couple hands I think I would have gotten away from if I had been playing better and been more in the groove of things like I am when I play daily. For example, I got stacked today with KK on when I raised a limper in position, flop comes J42 two spades, he check calls, then check minraises the turn. This is obviously a monster by him and normally I think I would get away from it. Other than that not much to say, running a little bad today as well, just checked pokerEV and -$2k in equity for the month but what else is new.

So I played a short session today and pretty much everyone playing 600nl on stars tonight was either a 12 tabling 18/14 nit or a buy in for $360 and see if I can’t make a run at it shortstack. It really allowed me to open up my game considerably preflop as you can see above. I ended up doing pretty well thanks to some suckouts 🙂 but in general these are my two least favorite opponents to play against which is why I ended up quitting after so short of a session. One huge nit in particular was on my direct left on two tables which was nice because when it was folded to me in the small blind, his big blind was just free money. I could literally open any two cards from the sb and he would never call and I could insta fold when he 3 bet me (which was pretty rare). This was my favorite hand of the session.

I made a post on CR forums about blind battle calling and shoving ranges because this is something I have struggled with in the past. I’d appreciate any input people have.

I’m currently taping “Children of Men” on HBO and I’m very excited to watch it. I love almost all sci-fi/futuristic movies. I wish they would make more. Some of my favorites I can think of off the top of my head are:

Blade Runner
Minority Report
I, Robot
Terminator 2
Fifth Element

If you can think of any others I may have not seen in this category please leave me a comment. Sorry no entertainment this post, gonna go 6-8 table some 400nl for awhile cuz at least I’ll get action there.

So I’m getting kind of tired/bored of poker recently. So far I have played 12k hands and for 32 hours. Yeah I’m up a good amount this month and making good money but I just don’t have all that much motivating me lately. I think I just need a new hobby or something. I’ll generally lounge around all day watch some tv, maybe a movie or two on HBO or whatever, read cardrunners & 2+2 forums, play a couple hours of poker and if I’m feeling especially motivated go running for like ~2 miles or so or whatever. It’s all becoming kinda boring to be honest and I’ll just play poker sometimes because I’m bored and have nothing else to do. I’m planning on buying some new wii games soon and perhaps reading a few books but I dunno, feels like life is rather uninteresting atm.

I have been feeling the itch to take a shot at 5/10 recently because I see the same fish I play at 3/6 playing there, but I’m going to resist and hold off til I have the $50k in my roll. When 5/10 starts I do think I will become motivated again, but that likely won’t be until at least the end of the month.

Sweet pic off digg.

I’ve managed to get myself on a really messed up sleeping schedule. I woke up at 5:30pm today and yesterday was the same. This always seems to happen to me when I don’t have obligations during the day. It’s really weird. Feels kinda vampiresque. When I go to sleep (7amish) it’s dark and when I wake up (5:30ish) its dark. Right now it’s 4am and feels like the afternoon to me. I think I need to make some sort of schedule or something.

I recently bought Ace on the River by Barry Greenstein and Weighing the Odds in Holdem Poker by King Yao. I finished Ace on the River in one reading session and the first 2/3 of it were pretty entertaining. Not really going to make you a better poker player , but entertaining the nonetheless. One of my favorite excerpts that made me lol:

1975, Las Vegas. Sarge Ferris, a high-stakes poker player, shot pool with someone who had very little money. After they had been playing for a while, a friend whispered to Sarge, “This guy’s got $200 to his name. You can’t beat him out of anything.” Sarge replied, “Yes I can. He’s got $40,200 now.”

The last 1/3 of the book was pretty much a joke IMO. Barry seems incredibly results oriented patting himself on the back for folding QQ on a AQ2 flop when a tight player 3 bet PF, checked flop, bet weak on turn, then shoved river. He also gives a hand where he says calling or going all in was the best play with QJs when he raised some tight guy coldcalled then a shorty went all in. He ended up folding and the tight guy called. Their hands? AA and QQ, but on the flop Barry would have made a flush and is like “yeah, in hindsight I think calling or going all in is the best play.” wtf?

Still only about 1/2 through the odds book. It’s kinda meh. Mostly for limit holdem. I’ll leave you with 100 funny quotes. 38 is quite good.

Is what the cop asked me when I got pulled over. I was late for a doctor’s appointment and pretty much never see cops on this road so I thought I was home free. I later found out on my drive back that they have radars/cameras all along the side of the highway. Bad beat. My one complaint is that he was a total dick about it. How come the cops have to yell at you and shit whenever you get pulled over. He was all in my face yelling at me like three times “LICENSE AND REGISTRATION!” Ya I was speeding, but dude no need to be a dick about it. I think they’re all on some power trip or trying to get a reaction out of me so they can search the car for no reason or some shit. Whatev, I hate cops.

Poker is going very well lately. I cannot tell you how much stuff I was missing/not utilizing before my lesson with nutedawg. He’s improved my game like 1000%. I just hope the good run continues.

Not much else goin’ right now except the nfl playoffs which I’ve been watching a lot of. The seahawks game was pretty boring, but the jags game delivered and was pretty quality. I’ll definitely be relaxin and watching the next two games tomorrow.

I’ll leave you with a sweet link I found in the cardrunner offtopic. Apparently I can beat up 24 kindergarteners. Honestly I think that’s a bit on the low side.

Looking at back at January 2007 posts I had an $870 bankroll and the following goals.

1. Stay away from cash games and play only sngs until my bankroll is at least $4000
2. Make $100k this year playing poker
3. Double my bankroll every month for first few months of the year
4. Play tilt free and realize that it is much more important to avoid losing money than to try to force it and maybe win money.

I think I succeeded in #1 for the most part thanks to my huge tourney score, I improved on #4, while #2 and #3 I failed. Overall though I am pretty happy with my results. I managed to go to school the whole year and still make ~$45k or so total playing poker part time. For 2008 I have am not really going to make monetary goals, though I do want to have a $20k+ month. My main goal is to

play a half a million hands

this equates to 40k hands a month with two 50k hand months thrown in. I think this is a very achievable goal and should keep me on track for the year.

I had my first coaching session with nutedawg tonight and I have to say it went very well. I am very satisfied with his services and he got me thinking a lot about things I was ignoring or not paying attention to. There are certain spots where I was calling or raising when folding is really the best play. He has a very methodical and mathematical approach to the game which I think is necessary to really beat high stakes well. The 2 hour session cost me $300 and I made $1200 while he was sweating me 2-3 table 600nl. It was sweet. I would definitely recommend him if you’d like someone to work out some minor leaks in your game.

I’ll leave you with a link to a clip of the sweetest hit I’ve seen in awhile. It’s on Chris Henry in the Titans Colts game this weekend. This was so cool when I saw it live on tv.

So I’m a bit behind in blog posts, but I played a disgusting amount of hands for me the past couple of days to achieve supernova. I had my wisdom teeth out on December 27th so I didn’t play that day, but really grinded the next couple of days to achieve supernova late on the 30th. I was mostly 6-8 tabling 400nl and wasn’t playing too great but managed to break about even. All was not lost however because I think I noticed a lot of leaks I was making in my game including: Making too many hero call downs, calling with marginal hands from the big blind facing a small blind steal like T8o or A4o, and being a bit too aggro with AKo preflop (ppl are so nitty on stars I think 3 bet folding it is okay to a 4 bet shove sometimes, but still like 4 bet shoving it).

I tried a bit unsuccessfully to try and move up to 600nl this month, can you guess from the graph where I started playing 600nl and 8 tabling 400nl? I’m about breakeven at 20k hands of 600nl so far. I’m going to start taking some coaching from nutedawg who I met through cardrunners soon. I’ll update how that goes with him later this month. Sorry no youtube entertainment this post I’m too distracted to find some – it’s 3rd quarter of the Michigan vs Florida bowl game 28-14 us. Hopefully we can hold on to win. Go Blue!

Update: 28-21. Damn you Tim Tebow.
