So I’ve finally gotten moved out to Seattle and settled in somewhat. It took 4-5 days of driving to get out here and another week before I could move into an apartment. Another week later cable guy finally shows up for his appointment to hook up internet and what do you know I haven’t played poker in like a month.

I’ve been playing alot recently though and am going to do my best to keep it up. My gf has a 8-5 job and its remarkably easy to get hands in when you know you won’t be able to play much post 6pmish PST 5 days a week. I’m definitely off my game a bit, I truly believe poker is like any skill/sport in that you need to “practice/train” everyday in order to stay on top/play well(that is you might say I’m out of poker shape at the moment).

I started off playing like one session of 2/4 to get back in the groove lost like 4 buyins, said fuck it and I’ve been playing mostly 5/10 & 10/20 since. Lately I’ve noticed the games either been playing alot deeper or I’ve just been playing longer sessions and building up big stacks. Either way I’ve been playing alot more deep poker lately and it’s definitely something I’m still adjusting to and thinking alot about. I’ve lost and won some of the biggest pots of my career lately, winner, big loser, bigger loser
In the first loser I’d been 3 betting Tinnitus(mark at table) almost every hand and he’d been calling every time so it’s a straight value 3 bet, facing the coldfour I figured swolen picked up on this and was making a move and besides Axs plays well deep. Flop is standard, still dunno about my preflop call on this one table was playing kinda tight except for me & Tinnitus iirc.

On second loser Luke had just stacked me literally like 10 hands previously by oversetting me with quads and I just didn’t believe he had a set there. I think my play is pretty good 100bb deep, 200bb I think it’s bad but I’m still not really sure where/how I should be folding on this one. Comments welcome. Anyways I had a good past two days and am slowly grinding my way out of the hole I’ve dug for myself these first couple days back.

I’ll try to update more in near future, I’ve had some ideas for more interesting posts lately rather than blablablah this is my life & hands I played recently. Also will try to gather up results for past couple months & post them. Until then enjoy Quentin Tarantino destroying some censoring bitch newscaster.

I try to keep this blog to track my poker progress so when I’m not really playing poker I don’t really update. I’ve probably played about 5k hands this month which is nothing really, basically breakeven since my graph post earlier so that’s about it for the poker front.

As far as real life goes I’ve been enjoying myself quite a bit. In my last week in vegas I went to the gun range w/ my housemates & a few others and blasted 4 machine guns & a desert eagle. I’m no gun fanatic or anything but it was a good time. To be honest I would have rather fired a glock or something with way less kick than the desert eagle – that thing about fell out of my hands every time I shot it. Also went to another cirque show, played a bit more live pokers etc. In the past week I’ve been visiting my brother in Durango, CO and been having a good time with that. Been whitewater rafting, hiking, saw Hitchcock(it was okay, nothing special but def entertaining) & played about 8 hours of Mario & Sonic at the Olympics on wii one day. The game is pretty addicting & wearing. I woke up the next day and my shoulders were sore (sad? brag? i dunno.)

Anyways, thats about it as far as updates go. I’m currently sitting in the airport waiting for my flight back to NC. In a couple of days I’m moving out to Seattle which should be interesting and a change of pace of things to say the least. I’m really looking forward to getting back into a somewhat normal routine of things next month and grinding out some long hours as I’ve been vacationing for quite sometime now & am missing some regularity in my life at the moment.

Just waiting for the inevitable midmonth doomswitch now.

andr3w321 on July 3rd, 2008

Well since I have been to vegas I’ve done quite a few blog worthy activities but haven’t really bothered to blog about them. In the past few weeks I’ve been skydiving, whitewash has some pics on his blog of him going which I was with, I’ve been boating with Jason & company, dodgy has some pics from the trip, I’ve been to a couple shows including steve wyrick magic, viva las vegas, and “Mystere” a Cirque du Soleil, I’ve won $120 playing craps w/ degen Pete, I’ve been to the infamous Rhino which I didn’t end up leaving til 6am when its bright outside and I’m still completely trashed, and I’ve also dodged many, many restaurant bills playing credit card roulette including a $900 that I was 2nd to last to be pulled at.

Pokerwise I ended the month of June down a bit, but I’m not quite sure what the final tally is since I don’t have access to my desktop at the moment, I’ll post results when I get around to it in a couple of weeks. It’s okay though because I’ve started July running pretty sick hot. I’ve started game selecting really well over the past week and it’s made a hell of a difference. I think it has a lot to do with my post that I made earlier this month where if I’m sitting at a table with 5 other regs my winrate might only be 1BB/100 and if I run even slightly bad I’m going to end up a loser over a decent sample of hands.

I’ve been watching quite a few videos recently. In this hand I minraise the river in position with a flush, exactly like Dogishead does in his “Duel” video on DeucesCracked and my opponent spazz shoves all in with king high. This is almost exactly like the hand that he played went down and I can honestly say watching that single video made me an extra $1500 here.

The main event started today, good luck to everyone playing in it. I suppose it kinda symbolizes my stay in vegas winding down. I’m going to try and play a bit more live and lounge around the pool more while I still have the chance in my last week or so.

Complete ear fuck video.

Played my first wsop event yesterday but “shock” I didn’t end up winning a bracelet. It was a $1500 10-max event that I think was fairly soft that I ended up busting 540ish out of 2700 with 270 paying. I’m pretty happy I played as it was a good experience and I did have a good time. Daniel Negreanu(sp?) was at the table directly behind me when we first started and he busted in like 20 mins I think, mastrblaster was also at my table later and I got to see his bracelet which he just won which was cool too.

On to some hands. Early on I got Aces a couple of times but didn’t get much action just picked up blinds or 3 bet and they folded. With blinds at 25/50 still some asian dude opens the CO to 200 and I look down at AKo from the sb and put him all in for 650 total. He calls it off with 78o and flop is 456. Nice. Down to 2500 or something at this point.

With blinds still at 25/50 I open to 150 utg with AKo and big blind defends which seems to be pretty common for these tournament players who seem to hate having their blinds stolen. Flop comes pretty gin for me, K62 rainbow. He check calls my 225 cbet. Turn is the Ad putting a flushdraw out there. He checks again and I tank for a bit – a little worried about a set and not sure if he’ll pay off with a worse king I decide to check back. River is the 3d completing the backdoor flush. He leads for 350 and I tank for a bit and end up shoving for 1700 more figuring he would have bet more w/ a set. He snapcalls w/ K2o for a flopped two pair. Well played sir.

With blinds at 50/100 there is a dead sb and folds around to me on the button which I open to 300 with 97s. BB defends(of course) and flop comes Ts8h6h with two hearts. He check calls my 400 cbet and turn is 7s putting two flushdraws out. He check folds to my 1000 turn bet and I’m sitting on like 6.5k or something.

Next interesting hand I play I open to 300 with AQo utg+1 and thugish looking 30 yr old dude asks how much I have left and then defends from sb or bb I forget. Flop comes KdJdTs (I’m good at flopping the nuts) and he check calls my 400 cbet. Turn is the Qc and he check calls my 850 turn bet. River is the Qd completing the flush and pairing the board and he donk shoves his last 1750 or so in. I tank for quite sometime and someone ends up calling a clock on me. I think it’s unlikely he has a Q since there’s only 1 left in the deck but I decide I don’t think he’s good enough to play an Ace this way to try and get me off a chop and probably just couldn’t fold his flushdraw and is passive enough to check call flop & turn w/ TT/JJ or whatever and end up folding leaving me at 3800 or so for the break.

With blinds at 100/200 I get moved to a new table and play pretty nitty reshoving AKo once and picking up blinds+open. Next interesting hands I have like 4500 I think and young kid wearing a Miami sweatshirt w/ quite a few chips opens to 600 from hijack and I flat QQ on button and bb comes along. Flop is 69J with a flushdraw and both check to me and I throw out a 1k chip. BB folds and Miami guy shoves all-in. I snap & he tables JTo. Turn is a 9, river is a T, & I double up with a better two pair.

Only other hand I played at this table 50ish talkative live pro I believe opens utg+2 and I flat 22 directly to his left. Board comes A96xx and it gets checked down w/ him saying “king high” on the river. Dunno why he’s not cbetting but whatever.

I get moved to a new table with “gunningforyou” who is actually mastrblaster two to my right which I didn’t know at the time(he just won the $5k freezeout & a bracelet for like $750k) and he’s opening like every pot. Blinds go up & there are antes now so it is definitely profitable but I feel like I have a pretty good seat at the table considering I can just re-ship on him pretty light and I don’t think he’ll call off his stack too light either. I get pretty card dead and get blinded away before finally reshoving over his button open from my BB with Q9o which he folds. Nice. I pretty much fold my way to dinner break and am sitting on 8500.

After break blinds are 300/600 with a 75 ante and I open 99 in EP. Big blind defends and flop comes QT7. It gets checked down with blanks coming on turn & river and I win vs 55. One more orbit around and I open to 1500 with JJ in EP and oldish guy goes all in for 3300 more, I snap and win vs his 77. Later I defend my bb with J9s vs mastrblaster’s btn steal and flop comes Qd8s7s giving me a flushdraw and gutterball. I check/shove over his 1700 cbet and take it down to put me at about 17.5k.

Now the bustout hand. Blinds still at 300/600 with 75 ante and it folds to me on button with Tc8c. I open to 1500 and 28ish guy with a nice watch who I’m not really sure is good or not defends his bb. Flop comes Ts9s6h. He checks and I cbet 2200 which he raises to 8k pretty quickly. I ask if he has me covered, tank a little bit, but I’m pretty sure he has some QJ/KJ overs+FD hand that I’m slightly ahead of and jam all in on. He calls and tables QhJc. Turn is the 6c or some brick and river is the 8h giving me two pair but him the straight and I’m out. Not gonna moan or whatever but such is tournaments. Average stack was about 12k at the time so it was a pretty massive pot I think.

I dunno if I’ll play anymore of these, there’s definitely good value in them but by the time the dinner break came I didn’t even really want to play poker anymore that day. After 6 hours of poker in one day I’m pretty tired and just want to relax but tournaments you have no choice – you have to play until bust. Whatevs I had a good time & whatnot hope you enjoyed the trip report.

Got into Vegas on Saturday. House is pretty sick though haven’t spent too much time in thus far. Checked out the Rio and saw pretty much every famous poker player you could imagine there and could stand about 10 feet away from them and watch them chat/play at the table. Was pretty awestruck.

Pokerwise I’m still stuck pretty good for the month but I’m hoping I’ll dig my way out before month’s end. Played a little 5/10 today and lost about ~$5k but luckily I played some 2/4 to 3/6 later as well as a little PLO and managed to get relatively close to even for the day. Definitely won my biggest PLO hand ever today http://www.pokerhand.org/?2768855

As far as playing live goes I played a short 2/5 session where there were really only 2 interesting hands. I’m really both a fullring & live playing fish but here they go. Hand1 old dude like utg+2 opens to $20, I flat QQ two to his left. Flop comes J68. He bets $25 and looks strong. I flat. Turn is some brick, like a 5 or something. He bets $75 and I call again. River is a brick and he shoves like $400 more. I flip over my cards and tank. He never looks at my hand and remains silent. I feel like he has a big hand mainly AA/KK/JJ and end up mucking. He shows AKo and I realize I gave him way too much credit and kinda tilt a bit. Hand2 is later, its like a 5 way limped pot and I limp Ad3d from MP. From comes down QdTc5d. Checked to me and I bet 20 – asian dude sitting about $600 deep to my left makes it $50. I don’t think he’s all that strong and in hindsight I definitely think flatting is best but I decide to make it $150. He calls. Turn is a Js. I bet like $250 and he calls. On river it bricks off & I have like $130 or so left and I just shove in small hopes that he folds but he calls w/ AQ. lol. I would obv play QT and 55 the same but whatev. After the hand he’s like “put you on flushdraw the whole time, you shouldn’t shake so much” I just say “nh” and walk away. I’m kinda dumbfounded cuz if he’s putting me on a flushdraw why isn’t he just shoving the turn? Also, I guess there’s no such thing as fold equity live which I will have to take into account and remember for the future. Anyways, other than that also played a little $1/$2 house game in which I won $230 which was nice.

I’ll leave you w/ a cool father’s day ad. Not as good as the usual vid stuff but its like 2:30am and I’m too tired to find something really good.

A sign of good things to come? I don’t really have the roll for 5/10 anymore due to cashouts and downswingaments so I’m going to stick to 6-tabling 3/6 until vegas. If anyone catches me playing above 3/6 before I’m in Vegas I’ll ship you $100.

I took a lil break from poker today and played wii for like 5 hours today and I gotta say my super mario galaxy game is coming along nicely(maybe I’ll work on my Resident Evil 4 game tomorrow). One thing I realized this afternoon is that when I was 8-tabling I thought I was reducing my variance because I was getting in so much more volume, but in reality I believe I was increasing it a ton. Let me explain. I was reminded of a deucescracked article I read a few months ago here that will go into much more detail and explain it better than I can but basically it’s this:

When I’m 4 tabling my winrate is say 5BB/100, 6 tabling say it’s 4 or 3 but 8 tabling I think it’s probably more like 1BB/100. Now when you have a winrate of 1BB/100 there is a MUCH MUCH MUCH greater chance that you are going to end up losing money over any particular span of hands. Now, 4 tabling I may not get as much volume in and my winrate might fall to say 1BB/100 when I’m running bad, but it’s still going to be in the green. 8-tabling with a winrate of 1BB/100 if I run even slightly bad I’m going to be in the red. Being in the red over a long span of hands for me usually puts me on tilt, which puts me even more in the red which can turn me into a losing player. To sum up, 4-6 tables is optimal for me IMO both for reducing variance & maximizing hourly.

Note about leatherass: he’s a machine. At first I thought I could just breakeven for the first 10k hands 8-tabling or 20k hands or whatever and be fine, eventually I would improve and winrate would go up. It’d be like learning poker all over again. While this may be true, it’s just not worth it for me. The amount of hours you have to work and the variance you are gonna deal with in the beginning is pretty sickening. Also, playing 800 hands an hour is just very mentally draining. I was so out of it the past couple of days when I put in like 4400 hand days. Soooo… I hope that made sense. I hope I didn’t lose too many fanboys from my tiltposts earlier.
