I’ll just go ahead and tell you now there’s gonna be some whining so if you don’t want to hear it just leave now. Been downswinging pretty hard the past couple of weeks. July was one of my worst months ever, I ran -$25k in EV and ended up losing like $15k of my money online plus $10k playing the main event and $10k buying action. I was up a ridic amount at one point for the month so it’s been pretty soulcrushing. I had to withdraw a bunch for an ATM event I’m doing and I’m down to like $12k online right now trying to grind it up from $1/$2 and just keep on getting destroyed by the poker gods.
I knew I had been running bad on the year but I didn’t know just how bad until I checked a couple days ago. Well here it is. -$111k in EV for the year so far. That’s all. Just $111k. (double click the images to view full size)
I’ve also lost something like $30k playing live tournies, at least $10k buying action and who knows how much playing online tournaments and 2-7 triple draw. I know that 120kish hands is definitely not the long term but it just keeps me wondering what exactly is the long term. How many hands do I need to play before the run good happens? I also know past luck has nothing to do with future luck, and I know I ran bad last year too and just because I’ve ran bad up until now doesn’t mean I won’t run just as bad if not worse in the the future.
I’ve been really struggling mentally lately and I just can’t stop thinking “what if” or “why me” or “if only I weren’t so unlucky”. It’s a really bad way of thinking and it shifts my focus away from playing the best poker I can to instead blame luck for my results. I know I’ve made plenty of mistakes I could improve on and will continue to improve on but right now I’m really struggling with every hand and beat I take. Sorry for the moaning, but that’s my update for the past couple of weeks. Best of luck at the tables.
TED talk that explains why poker players move up in stakes after losing, or start 3 betting more or playing more aggressively to try and get their money back
thanks for sharing that interesting video. Phil Ivey has a stop loss and probably plays forever when he’s winning.
I on the other hand, chase losses and quit when I’m up. It’s the monkey in me that I need to overcome.
thanks again
Nice vid, and I just found your blog. Great Ivey story in a previous entry.
Maybe it’s just me, but even though that chick in the TED vid isn’t hot, she really turns me on with all that smart talking.
Love the blog!!!
Also live in seattle.
Hope to be up in the same levels as you, some day.
As far as the down turn,no worries, even good players have bad days.
Best of luck!!!
Loved the “anthony schooled ” vid.
